Egyptian player Mayar Sherif, number 172 in the WTA, claimed a fantastic victory and  won in the qualifying round of Roland-Garros in one hour and eight minutes by 6-4 and 6-0 to María Camila Osorio Serrano, Colombian tennis player, number 188 in the WTA . With this result, the winner adds new points to her ranking to access the Roland-Garros tournament.

Osorio Serrano managed to break her opponent’s serve 3 times, while Sherif managed it 7 times. Likewise, the Egyptian player achieved 68% in the first service, 3 double faults and made 57% of the service points, while her opponent achieved a 60% effectiveness, made a double fault and won 32% of points to serve.

Mayar Sherif has career-high WTA rankings of 171 in singles, as well as 268 in doubles, set on 16 March 2020. Sherif has won eight singles titles and six doubles titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit.

Sherif studied at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, graduating in 2018 with a BS in Sports Medicine. She was part of the university’s women’s tennis team, playing for the Waves.

Making history as the first ever Egyptian to qualify for competing at the Olympic Games, athlete Mayar Sherif earned gold medal, a record-breaking number, in the 2019 African Games thus ensuring her eligibility for the reputed sporting event.


Egypt’s participation in the 12th African Games, which was ongoing from August 16 to August 30 in Morocco’s Rabaat city, resulted in a total of 229 medals, of which most were silver and 79 were gold.
