A scroll through Mahmoud Soror’s Instagram will have you clicking the follow button in no time! With over 20K followers, this photoshop whizz has everyone talking. We got the opportunity to catch up with Soror for a quick interview, and we were amazed to learn that he is a self-taught graphic designer. He wanted to study media, but his parents thought it was best for him to pursue a “safer” career and pressurized him into studying Mechanical Engineering. After his success as an artist skyrocketed on social media, his family was inspired by his talent and determination, and they’re now his biggest supporters. His sister is actually the one who took all the pictures of him that he used to photoshop himself into images.
His series titled “In The Parallel Universe” features Egyptian celebrities, including Salma Abu Deif, Asser Yassin, Amir Karara, Ahmed El Sakka, and Mohamed Ramadan, depicted in realistic portraits wearing Victorian-era dresses, coats and uniforms. Over favorite perhaps is Nelly Karim as Mona Lisa, who was reposted by Nelly herself. Other photoshopped images include one of himself hugging Christiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah, respectively, and many more images that rely heavily on pop culture.
So what’s next for this 22-year-old gifted artist?
Soror is now working on a new series entitled “Old is Gold”, depicting Egyptian celebrities as they are now, side-by-side with whom they were when they first came out at the beginning of their careers. On the long run, after graduating as an engineer, Soror plans on moving from Alexandria to Cairo to pursue his life-long dream of becoming a movie poster designer. We look forward to seeing his work!
