Maisie Sly’s performance in The Silent Child moved audiences to their core and won her an Oscar for Best Live Action Short. Maisie, a 6 year old deaf girl from Swindon, England, played Libby in the movie, who too was deaf and born into a hearing family who struggle to cope with her condition.

Maisie showed up in the Oscars in a stunning blue dress on her first red carpet event ever, in fact, her first acting role ever and stole the hearts of everyone that met her. This win was not only big for Maisie but perhaps even the history of the academy awards, it was a show of progression and open mindedness- something the oscars were often criticized to lack, but evidently they are catching up with the times and The Silent Child was a great place to start.
